You Have To Read – Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Being Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice

Yesterday, I was reading this article in the NY Post from Adam Grant:

Unless You’re Oprah, ‘Being Yourself’ Is Terrible Advice

This is a must read for anybody in business preaching authenticity.

Grant gives this definition of being authentic: “Erasing the gap between what you firmly believe inside and what you reveal to the outside world.”

When you think about it, you don’t want to be authentic as if you are, you can be in much trouble!

Examples given by Grant of being authentic includes a test done by A.J. Jacobs over a decade ago:

“He announced to his editor that he would try to sleep with her if he were not married. He told his nanny that he would go on a date with her if his wife agreed and he told the 5-year-old daughter of one of his friend that the beetle in her hand was not napping but dead!”

All that to say that being authentic is not the best idea. We should not say out loud everything that goes through our mind.

But what should we do then?

How about being sincere….which is free of deceit, hypocrisy, or falseness; earnest; genuine; real.

That would be good for business and keep us out of trouble.

So become sincere and forget being authentic!
